Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group art therapy on the post-traumatic growth and ego-resilience of North Korean youths living in South Korea. For this purpose the study selected North Korean youths at alternative schools and middle and high schools in Seoul and Incheon. From them twenty students were ultimately chosen for the data of this study. Ten students were chosen for the experimental group(EG), while ten students were assigned for the control group(CG). Each week a session taking about ninety minetes of art therapy was conducted eight times for the experimental group. In the meantime there was neither art therapy nor any of expressive arts therapy for the control group. The study examined the change of post-traumatic growth(PTGI) and ego-resilience(CD-RISC) before and after the group art therapy. The results are as follows: First, the study found that the post-traumatic growth(PTG) of North Korean youths significantly increased after the group art therapy. Especially, it presented an affirmative change of 'relating to others.¡¯ Second, the study revealed a statistically meaningful development of 'personal competence' in the sub-variable of ego-resilience after the group art therapy. Unlike many previous researches of psycho- therapeutic treatment, which have mainly focused on the traumatic symptoms and psychological dysfunction of North Korean youths, this paper investigated the effects of group art therapy on their post-traumatic growth and ego-resilience. The significance of the study gives a clear evidence of the effects of group art therapy, so that it offers a new foundation of research into a clinical treatment and psychological growth of North Korean youths living in South Korea.
